BBB Gives Bel Furniture an F Rating

As we like to provide customer reviews on our site, we try and keep track of what we hear from around the industry to keep you informed. One recent newsworthy story surrounding Bel Furniture has been an F rating given by the Better Business Bureau (BBB). This rating is incredibly harsh and piqued our interest in what was going on. Unfortunately, it’s hard to follow all of the details about what happened and so, we’ll try and give you the best overview we can.

Evaluating the issues that caused the F grade for Bel Furniture, it seems that the big focal points were trouble with advertising, delivery, and the overall quality of the merchandise found at Bel Furniture. These issues tend to be the same ones we find at every furniture store, but the problem with Bel Furniture seemed to be the severity of the issues that were described. We read up on a few of the complaints and the problems were certainly disheartening.

From readings on the company, one concern we saw was that advertisements either weren’t honored, or required work to get honored. The common example involved a promotion where you would receive a free HD television with a purchase at Bel Furniture. A man bought 1,100 dollars in furniture, and when he inquired about the television, was told it was expired. This response was in spite of a banner on the front of the store, and the newspaper ads distributed by the company that promised otherwise.

Not the grade you want to see when shopping for furniture, so what happened?

Where things get interesting is in the response by Bel Furniture regarding the BBB claims. According to Bel Furniture, the company has provided evidence to the BBB rebuking the claims by the customers regarding the HD televisions. According to Bel, you’re only allowed to choose one of their various promotions with your purchase, and can’t choose all of them. They also provided evidence that they responded to the customers complaints that the BBB took into consideration promptly and with generous actions.

Bel Furniture believes that the BBB has some bias in the issue, pointing out several rivals in the area that have received significantly more complaints with the BBB and yet have a much higer rating. Their examples include Rooms To Go which has 1723 complaints, Roomstore with 265 complaints, and then their own stores which have just 108 complaints. These numbers stand out considering Bel Furniture has an F rating while the other companies have received an A+ and B- rating respectively. These claims have legitimacy, and it is hard to say if the BBB just didn’t try hard enough to talk to Bel Furniture and find out the truth behind a lot of the complaints that were made.

With these details in mind, it’s unfortunately hard to know what exactly to make of all of it. We will try and keep everyone informed as we read more about the story and hear additional news about Bel Furniture’s placement with the BBB. While we don’t see a reason for the BBB to be biased, they haven’t addressed the concerns with the ratings that Bel Furniture has introduced. As such, we continue with our recommendation that people take these ratings with a grain of salt and ultimately make their decisions based upon friends and their own experiences.
